Make a Herbal Mocktail for Juneteenth: Our Sans-gria Recipe

If you have been looking for an alcohol free drink that is as beautiful and intentional as anything on a cocktail menu, this is the one. Our Sans-gria is a peach hibiscus herbal mocktail made with our JuneTEAnth blend and it has been selling out at every farmers market we have attended this season. People try it once and immediately ask how to make it at home, so here is the full recipe.

WHAT IS SANS-GRIA?

Sans-gria is our plant-powered take on sangria, built entirely around herbs and fruit with no alcohol in sight. The base is a hibiscus and peach blend made with our JuneTEAnth organic herbal tea, which gives it that deep ruby color and naturally tart flavor that makes it look and taste like something a skilled bartender spent an hour crafting. It is finished with a house-made brown sugar peach syrup that adds just enough sweetness to balance the tartness of the hibiscus without overpowering the natural fruit flavor.

It is sober curious approved, naturally caffeine free, and genuinely one of the most refreshing drinks you can pour at any summer gathering.

WHY JUNETEENTH BLEND?

Our JuneTEAnth blend was formulated specifically to celebrate the cultural significance of Juneteenth and the rich herbal traditions that run through Black American, West African, and Caribbean food and wellness culture. Hibiscus has been used for centuries across West Africa, the Caribbean, and the American South as both a daily wellness ritual and a celebratory drink, and it is the heart of this blend.

The full ingredient list reads like a summer spice cabinet: hibiscus for that signature deep red color and heart-supporting antioxidants, lemongrass for bright citrus flavor and digestive support, clove and cinnamon for warming depth and circulation support, ginger for digestive ease and a gentle kick, and orange peel for natural antioxidants and a bright finish.

Together, they create an herbal tea base that tastes like something you would pay twelve dollars for at a rooftop bar, except it is made by you, with organic herbs, and your body actually feels good after drinking it.

THE SANS-GRIA RECIPE

Makes 32oz, serves approximately 4

What you need:

For the Sans-gria base:

  • 3 tablespoons of JuneTEAnth herbal blend
  • 1 cup of frozen or fresh peaches
  • 4 cups of water

For the brown sugar peach syrup (makes 8oz):

  • Half a cup of peaches
  • Half a cup of brown sugar
  • Half a cup of water

How to make the Sans-gria base:

  1. Add your peaches and water to a saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat.
  2. Once simmering, turn off the heat completely and add your 3 tablespoons of JuneTEAnth blend directly to the hot liquid.
  3. Let it steep for a minimum of 20 minutes or overnight for a deeper, more developed flavor.
  4. Strain out the peaches and herbs, then chill the liquid completely before serving.

How to make the brown sugar peach syrup:

  1. Add your peaches and water to a small saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Simmer for 10 mins or until the peaches begin to break down.
  3. Add brown sugar.
  4. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely.
  5. Remove from heat, strain, and let cool completely before using.
  6. Store in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to two weeks.

To assemble each drink:

  1. Fill a glass with ice.
  2. Pour your chilled Sans-gria base over the ice until the glass is about three-quarters full.
  3. Add one ounce of brown sugar peach syrup, and stir gently to combine.
  4. Garnish with a fresh or frozen peach slice and serve immediately.

Herbalist tip: The longer you steep the JuneTEAnth blend in the peach water the deeper the color and the more complex the flavor. An overnight steep in the fridge after the initial hot steep creates a Sans-gria that tastes like you spent hours on it. You did not. The herbs did the work.

HOW TO MAKE IT FOR A CROWD

This recipe scales beautifully for summer gatherings. To make a full gallon, simply multiply every ingredient by four and follow the same method in a larger pot. The brown sugar peach syrup also scales easily and keeps in the fridge for up to two weeks so you can make it ahead and have it ready whenever you need it.

For a Juneteenth gathering, a backyard cookout, or any summer celebration where you want something beautiful and intentional on the table for every guest, including the ones not drinking, this is the recipe worth making.

IS SANS-GRIA SOBER CURIOUS FRIENDLY?

Completely. Sans-gria contains zero alcohol, zero artificial flavors, and zero synthetic ingredients. Every element is plant-based, naturally colored, and formulated by an herbalist who has been sober curious before the term existed. The hibiscus gives it that deep ruby color that makes it look like wine without a single drop of alcohol involved, and the peach syrup gives it the kind of sweetness and depth that makes it feel like a real drink rather than a consolation prize.

If you are navigating a sober curious lifestyle, doing a dry month, or simply prefer mocktails ten times out of ten the way I do, this recipe was made for you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What does Sans-gria taste like? Sans-gria tastes like a lightly sweetened hibiscus peach iced tea with warm spice undertones from the ginger, clove, and cinnamon in the JuneTEAnth blend. It is naturally tart from the hibiscus, fruity from the peach, and has a depth of flavor from the spices that makes it feel more complex than a standard iced tea. The brown sugar peach syrup adds a gentle sweetness that balances everything perfectly.

Can I make Sans-gria without the brown sugar peach syrup? Yes, the Sans-gria base is delicious on its own without the syrup if you prefer a less sweet drink. You can also swap the brown sugar syrup for honey, agave, or any sweetener that works for your dietary preferences. The base itself is naturally unsweetened so you have complete control over how sweet the final drink is.

How long does Sans-gria keep in the fridge? The Sans-gria base keeps in the fridge for up to five days in a sealed container. The brown sugar peach syrup keeps for up to two weeks. We recommend making both ahead of time and assembling each glass fresh with ice when you are ready to serve.

Can I use dried hibiscus instead of JuneTEAnth blend? You can use bulk dried hibiscus to make a simpler version of this drink but you will miss the complexity that the lemongrass, ginger, clove, cinnamon, and orange peel in the JuneTEAnth blend bring to the flavor profile. The full blend is what gives Sans-gria its depth and makes it taste like more than just hibiscus water.

Is hibiscus tea good for you? Hibiscus is one of the most studied herbs in traditional medicine and has been used for centuries to support cardiovascular health, healthy blood pressure, and immune function. It is rich in antioxidants and vitamin C and has been a staple wellness drink across West Africa, the Caribbean, and the American South for generations. At The Herbal Scoop we source certified organic hibiscus specifically because the quality of the herb matters as much as the recipe it goes into.

Where can I buy JuneTEAnth herbal blend? JuneTEAnth blend is available exclusively through The Herbal Scoop at theherbalscoop.com and at our farmers market booth in the Hudson Valley. We ship nationwide from our herbal tea shop in Narrowsburg, NY.
