Spearmint (Mentha spicata): Spearmint's distinction from peppermint is meaningful: it contains approximately 0.5% menthol compared to peppermint's 40%, and its primary active compound is carvone, which researchers believe inhibits the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase involved in converting testosterone to the more potent androgen DHT. Two small randomized controlled trials in females with elevated androgens found that drinking two cups of spearmint tea daily for 30 days was associated with significant reductions in free and total testosterone levels. Researchers describe the evidence as promising but still limited, and note that both studies were small, calling for larger trials.

Important: Because spearmint may influence androgen and hormone levels, those with hormone-sensitive conditions or who take hormone-modulating medications should consult their healthcare provider before regular use.
