HOW TO USE

Naturally sweet, deeply grounding, and an herbalist's favorite, organic licorice root is a caffeine-free, loose-leaf bulk herb made for your daily ritual. 2oz brews approximately 10 to 15 cups.

Simmer one teaspoon in 8oz of water for 10 to 15 minutes for a naturally sweet, full-bodied decoction, or add a small amount to tea blends for natural sweetness without sugar. Licorice root pairs beautifully with marshmallow root, ginger, or tulsi.

Licorice root is one of the most widely used herbs in the world, with a documented history of use spanning over 4,000 years across Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, ancient Egypt, and European herbal traditions. Herbalist-formulated by Kendra, founder and herbalist of The Herbal Scoop, our bulk licorice root is organic, sourced from a certified organic, kosher certified supplier, and sold in small batches from our herbal tea shop in Narrowsburg, NY, so you always get the freshest, most potent licorice root available.

Naturally sweet, deeply grounding, and versatile, licorice root is one of the most important herbs in any serious apothecary. Whether you are supporting your body's response to chronic stress, soothing an uneasy gut, easing throat discomfort, or blending it into a complex herbal formula, licorice root belongs in your herbal cabinet year-round.

ABOUT THIS HERB

Licorice Root (Glycyrrhiza glabra): a dried cut root rich in glycyrrhizin, a compound naturally sweeter than sugar, that also carries antioxidant and adaptogenic properties. Used across Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda as a harmonizing herb, licorice root is as much a tool for the skilled herbalist as it is a daily wellness herb.

Important: This listing is for whole licorice root, which contains glycyrrhizin. DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice) is a different product with the glycyrrhizin removed. If you have high blood pressure or are pregnant, please consult your healthcare provider before use.

Our bulk licorice root is organic, sourced from a certified organic, kosher certified supplier, and packed to order in small batches in Narrowsburg, NY to ensure maximum freshness and potency. Available in 2oz, 4oz, and 8oz so you can order exactly what your ritual requires.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between licorice root and DGL?
DGL stands for deglycyrrhizinated licorice, meaning the glycyrrhizin compound has been removed. DGL is gentler for long-term use and commonly used for isolated digestive comfort, but it does not offer the adrenal support associated with glycyrrhizin. Whole licorice root, which is what we carry, contains glycyrrhizin and is the form associated with adrenal and adaptogenic support. If your goal is gut comfort only and you have blood pressure concerns, DGL may be more appropriate. If your goal includes adrenal support, whole root is what you need.

Does licorice root support adrenal wellness?
Yes. Licorice root is one of the most widely used herbs for adrenal support. Its active compound glycyrrhizin is associated with extending cortisol's active presence in the body, which traditional herbalists associate with supporting a tired stress response. It is typically cycled, used for 4 to 6 weeks at a time, and is not recommended for people with high blood pressure. Consult your healthcare provider for personalized guidance.

Is licorice root safe during pregnancy?
No. Licorice root containing glycyrrhizin is not recommended during pregnancy. Research suggests glycyrrhizin can cross the placental barrier. Pregnant and breastfeeding people should avoid whole licorice root entirely and consult their healthcare provider before use.

Does licorice root support gut comfort?
Yes. Licorice root has a long history of use for soothing an uneasy gut lining and supporting digestive ease. Its properties make it a key ingredient in traditional gut-comfort formulas alongside marshmallow root and slippery elm. For long-term use without blood pressure concerns, consider DGL instead of whole root.

What does licorice root tea taste like?
Licorice root tea has an intensely sweet, anise-like flavor with a warm, slightly earthy finish. It is naturally caffeine-free and adds complex natural sweetness to any herbal tea blend without added sugar.
